The movie was great for what it was... a parody of the 1940's propaganda films. The bad acting and over-the-top stereotypes were true to the genre.

It was a sci-fi romp, which I enjoyed, because I didn't sit there and watch it seriously.

It is a propaganda film. As a film in its own right its appalling but as an exercise in filmmaking it's great.

Do not read the book if you have any wishy washy liberal leanings.

Actually I thought the line taken with the film was great. Evidently Verehoven ( apologies on spelling ) remember bombers going over as a kid in Holland in WW2.

There is the potential for a more serious film out of the book. Especially if it concentrates more on the training which actually takes up a good half of the book. Also on personal relationships of the indivduals. The gung-ho shoot up is really a minority activity in the film.

Even so, now that I have a DVD player it is one for collection. Already have Zulu, 2001 and Tron.

Right here. Serious or not it wasn't a good film. When I first saw it I wasn't expecting much and it didn't deliver much. Maybe I need to watch it again to get all the 'satire'. Enjoyable? Just. Great film? Not in my book.

well, great might be an over the top classification. But the way I see it, that film can only be disliked if its watched as a film taking itself serious on all levels.

definitely not a GREAT FILM, but still interesting, and enjoyable to watch when the brain is not up to a dose of Karusawa.
